Synopsis
Dance
Video:
A dance video set in present day that
follows a ghost/dancer who had lost her job and the workplace closed down. The
dance is set in an abandoned Grammar School in Swanage, the work place has
closed down due to a lack of funding and government neglect, the dance will
show how the character is feeling about the loss of her job through
contemporary dance, that will focus on treasuring the memories she had within
the school.
Treatment:
Story – The story will follow
an individual character/ghost whose workplace has closed down and their dance
will express their memories of the abandoned/ closed down location that is
being danced in, focusing on smaller actions which will remind the character of
the job they used to have. They appear to be reconnecting in their place of
work while disappearing and appearing in different places throughout the
school.
Themes – Loss of a job and
income. Loss of identity. Loss of a local business and something that would
have brought the community together. Emptiness and abandonment. Loss of
something, which was once loved (charitable reasons). The decaying of a
building, which could have had historical significance. Themes based around
Thatcherism and the top-‐down repression that was caused during the strikes in
the 1980’s.
Structure – a 6 minute video dance piece shot in the location of an abandoned building, shots of the dancer interacting with the building highlighting possible memories (intricate details, close-‐ups), wide shots to show the scale of the buildings that have closed, solo dancer in a huge environment to emphasis scale.
Developed ‘Ghost’ Idea
Idea as we are using derelict abandoned locations
we were advised to play around with the theme of ghosts. Usually ghosts are associated
with these types of locations and we thought it would visually pleasing and fun
to play around with this idea.
